My photos are raw and simple, and actually not professional, which is their charm, if they have any.... The site can reflect this simplicity.

I joined this unit on March 11, 2003 at Camp Mathilda, in Kuwait. My photos begin
(with a shot of a “vagina graffitti” in a latrine) on March 11, and continue to May 3. During this 50-some day period I shot every day, and I shot the same people: the small group of young Marines I joined with on March 11 and accompanied through the invasion, and 1000 kilometers of death and destruction.

I wrote the scripts for the HBO show and provided my photos as references for the
production, so a lot of the pictures I snapped of marines became part of the show. Fo example, the real Colbert ran in a field imitating an airplane, which I photographed and which a fan then used to create a meme here, with Skarsgard as Colbert on top and real Colbert below.

My book is popular with military people. They know its history. But many nonmilitary fans of the show don’t really know it’s based on a true book. So, a major theme of this site is introducing the real marines of Generation Kill. HBO used the Marines heavily in the promotions of the show, and a few were in it.

These photos introduce the real
Marines of Generation Kill in ways that will be surprising and exciting to fans.
